As part of the new Discussions Inspiring Neighborhood Engagement (D.I.N.E.) program the City of Santa Rosa would like to host a discussion among neighbors about important issues facing our city.
DINE In Person (Took place October 11th)
The DINE program pairs volunteer hosts with residents of their larger geographical neighborhood to eat dinner together while having a facilitated discussion about local affairs. Meals will take place simultaneously throughout the city with 8-10 volunteer guests and one facilitator at each site. Each dining site will be discussing the same issues so we can combine overall trends and commonalities to share with participants, the larger community, city staff and elected officials.
DINE Online (Going on now!)
This year we are expanding our dinner table discussions to include residents who cannot make it in person or would rather participate online by hosting this online discussion. We will even post discussion notes from (at least) one of our dinners online in real-time!
Join the discussion right now!
DINE in-person concluded Oct 11th but the conversation is just beginning!

Ideas flowing about improving civic participation: If every civic meeting happens in the school sites than it revitalizes the neighborhood school as the center of the neighborhood and then maybe people would notice ways to improve their local schools.

People should be able to go to one place to get services. Make the local school the hub that provides multiple human services. How do we want to make the school the center of neighborhood services and civic participation?

How do define "civic engagement"?

City needs to say we are going to have our meetings in places where people can reach and be able to participate. Have our meetings at schools. Make the meeting times more accessible to people who are working. Both government and nonprofits need to do everything they can to be more accessible. DINE is a great example of getting discussions going.

There's nothing wrong with conflict. There needs to be a culture of inclusivity. It's messy but the point of doing it is that it's worth it.

How do we get more diversity on our boards and commissions? - Training more young people to give them experience, support, validation and courage. - If you want to include people of different backgrounds then we need to find them transportation, childcare, do anything it takes to help them get involved.

for council, you have to have a certain economic status to run, the job pays little, why would a young person run? its $800 a month. not very enticing.

Can government use social media and online technologies to help involve young people? *Need to use those online tools to communicate what services are available so that they are educated ambassadors to the rest of their communities.

The city's sesquicentennial in 2018, should showcase the entirety of the history of Santa Rosa, the goo, the bad, the beautiful, the ugly. and any events around the celebration needs to embrace the entire population of the city.
